Believe what your heart tells you when you ask, “Does this spark joy?” – Marie Kondo
Watch Marie Kondo on Netflix now!
The KonMari Method™ of organising is a worldwide phenomenon, created by Marie Kondo, the Japanese organising guru. It has been featured in thousands (millions??) of articles all over the world and she has written three books and now even has a Netflix show to help guide you through the process. You can also find multiple demonstrations on YouTube.
We call the process a ‘tidying festival’. This is because we do it all in one go, once and for all. That is it. You will change your mind set and never rebound into clutter again
What does a tidying festival involve?
Bit of an odd name, but it is going to be fun (once you’ve got over the initial fear)!
Ultimately, the method teaches you how to identify what ‘sparks joy’ in your life and keep only those things – whilst naturally discarding the rest. This allows you to only surround yourself in things that you truly love and live your best life.
You will learn how to:
Identify what sparks joy and what to discard (don’t worry, you will learn what sparks joy for you along the way!)
- Identify your ideal lifestyle and how to achieve this
Let go of items you wish to discard
Remove the guilt from your discard decisions
Store items optimally
Fold items the KonMari way
Become more mindful of what you bring into your life
The KonMari Method™ of tidying follows a set of tried and tested rules to obtain optimal results and avoid rebound. The process follows the below order of items within your home, to ensure you completely hone your ‘joy checking’ skills:
Clothes > Books > Paperwork > Komono (miscellaneous items) > Sentimental Items
The main principles are as follows:
You declutter by category, not location – we pile everything together so you can see exactly what you own. Trust me it is always more that you think!
You handle every single item you own and follow the spark joy concept – does this bring you joy? Does it add value? Does it reflect the life I want to lead?
Send the items that do not spark joy away with gratitude for the lessons they taught you and the service they provided you.
Tidy once and for all
Become more mindful of the things you bring into your home – you don’t want to contaminate the things you love with things that you have lukewarm feelings towards.
Everything has a home and it is easy to just put things back there and not let things pile up.
